International Graduates
Long Beach Memorial Family Medicine accepts applications only through the
Electronic Residency Application System
.
To enroll with ERAS, you need to contact the Association of American Medical Colleges at (202) 828-0400. You must also be enrolled with the
National Resident Matching Program
,
and be cleared by the
Education Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates
(ECFMG). They can be reached at (215) 386-5900.
For graduates wishing to enter training in the State of California, you must first receive written clearance from the
Medical Board of California
.
Applicants who do not have a "California letter" will not be invited to interview. You can contact them at (916) 263-2486.
We are affiliated with the University of California, Irvine, and must comply with their rules regarding visa sponsorship. Foreign nationals may have a F-1 or H-1 Visa. UCI will sponsor the visa if you match in one of their residency programs after one year. A foreign graduate who attended a foreign school must be a citizen of the US or a permanent resident.
Having met all of the above requirements, the same criteria are applied as for US graduates. We review transcripts, letters of recommendation and USMLE results. As we have been fortunate to have several hundred applicants apply each year, we are not able to interview every applicant. Furthermore, we only rank applicants whom we interview.
Statistically, there are more unfilled positions in the midwest and on the east coast than on the west coast. We have always filled all of our positions from the NRMP Match Program. The Association of American Medical Colleges has a Web site that allows you to log on and find open residency positions. It is
http://www.aamc.findaresident.org
.
You can also listen to the American Academy of Family Physician’s Hotline number, (800) 288-2668, regularly to learn where open FP residency positions exist. The
AAFP
also lists advertisements for open positions.
