Director of Health Policy
Joining the faculty as Director of Health Policy culminates a long journey home…
After leaving Stanford University with a degree in Human Biology, I worked as a medical volunteer in rural northern El Salvador, providing clinical support for local Salvadoran physicians, promoting health, and organizing a community potable water project. Upon my return stateside, I finished medical school at the University of Southern California, during which time I was an active member of the American Medical Student Association, chairing the Global Health Action Committee. I then completed residency here at Long Beach Memorial , where I served as Chief Resident.
Thereafter, I practiced full-scope family medicine at several community health centers in southern California and in Boston, where I earned my Master’s degree in Public Health at the Harvard School of Public Health, with an emphasis in Health Policy and Management.
As Director of Health Policy, my envisioned role is to educate our residents about the policymaking world that lives “upstream” from direct patient care and how to integrate this understanding into clinical practice so that the health of our patients is optimized. I also hope to inspire our residents as they explore various physician leadership and patient advocacy opportunities. My current leadership roles include active service as a member of the California Academy of Family Physicians’ Legislative Affairs Committee and as local director for
RxVote
,
a voter registration campaign targeting eligible voters at community health centers.
Away from work, I am happily married to Sumina Fukami, a local pediatrician. Together, we are the lucky parents for our beautiful and darling baby girl, Emma Madeline, and our handsome new son, Austin Kai.
I leave you to digest this quotation attributed to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: “Of all the forms of inequality, injustice in health is the most shocking and the most inhumane.” May we together continue to do all of which we are capable to achieve health justice for all.
