Director
Hi, I'm Sue Melvin, and I've been the Program Director here since 1998. I graduated from the Western University of Health Sciences in 1984 and completed my residency in Family Medicine at Riverside General Hospital University Medical Center in 1987. Immediately out of residency I joined a family medicine group practice in Long Beach, and started volunteer attending at the residency program here on my days off. In 1989 I joined the faculty full time as an Assistant Director.
I completed a Visiting Faculty Fellowship in Faculty Development and Geriatrics at East Carolina University in 1992, and am board certified in Family Practice with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in Geriatrics. In 1996, in an effort to be geographically closer to family, I relocated to Reno, NV. During that time, I found that I missed the residents and faculty tremendously. In 1998, the opportunity to return to Long Beach Memorial as the Residency Director arose, and I jumped on the opportunity and returned to Long Beach without hesitation!
I hold appointments as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine and as an Associate Clinical Professor at the Western University of Health Sciences. I was also recently appointed to the Osteopathic Medical Board of California. I have special clinical interest in child abuse, domestic violence, women's health and geriatrics, and have had the opportunity to publish textbook chapters and a few articles on these subjects in the medical literature. I enjoy lecturing on various Family Medicine topics.
Away from work, I love to walk on the beach, and I enjoy bicycling (Long Beach has miles of bike paths!) and golf.
