CLERKSHIP

Welcome to our website and thank you for considering Long Beach Memorial Family Medicine Residency Program for your 4th year family medicine clerkship or sub-internship. We begin accepting clerkship and sub-I applications in January for the next academic year, will begin confirming these clerkships at the end May, and will accept applications through October. We date the applications as they arrive and will honor eligible applications in order of their receipt.

We are student-friendly, and have much to offer. Most clerks will spend three weeks in the office setting and one week with the inpatient team. In-house call will be expected (1 or 2 nights) during the week while on the in-patient service. The schedule for the outpatient weeks is Monday through Friday, 8:30 am -5 pm, with no call. Our sub-I rotations are offered January through June, and include one call-night per week. Both the 4th year clerkships and sub-I rotations are 2 to 4 weeks long, and begin and end per the student's schedule and preference.

Besides seeing patients in the office or hospital settings, we encourage students to get involved in our community activities which include:

  • Team physician duties for Cabrillo High School football games
  • Sports physicals for local schools
  • "Doc Is In" which is an outreach program at Jordon High School
  • "AAFP Tar Wars" which is a smoking prevention program for 5th graders
  • "Fit-Teen" which is a program designed to teach overweight teens and their families about exercise and nutrition
  • "Diabetes Support Group" which include teaching, education and clinical interventions
  • "Reach Out and Read" program which provides free books for our patients who are children

What are we looking for? We are looking for 4th year students from ACGME approved schools within the United States. We need the attached application completed. This is a standard application used for all students applying for electives at Long Beach Memorial. Memorial and it requires your school to sign the last page.

    Summary of what is needed:

  • The completed application
  • A copy of your transcripts
  • A copy of your Comlex/USMLE scores
  • A photograph of you
  • A letter from your school indicating that you are recommended and covered by health insurance and malpractice insurance
  • A copy of your Immunization Record and a Recent TB
  • During Flu Season = proof of required Flu Shots (we can sometimes get one for you in our Employee Health Department, but not always)

If your rotation is approved, you will receive a confirmation, followed by a communication from our Graduate Medical Education Office giving you access to train on our electronic medical records system (we have EMR in the hospital and outpatient setting) prior to your rotation. You will also be asked to take our hospital’s HIPPA course online.

You will be welcomed by our residency coordinator, Cindy Neal. Cindy has been with the program since 1981 and loves working with students. You will be supervised by Dr. Cynthia Herzog, former Long Beach Memorial Chief Resident and Associate Residency Program Director.

Again, thank you for your interest. We met many of our current residents during their clerkships with us and look forward to meeting you. If you have any questions, please contact Cindy Neal at
cneal@memorialcare.org for information or call her at 562-933-0063
