I am currently a full-time faculty member at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine. In my faculty role I teach medical students and serve as the Director of the Hawaii/Pacific Basin Area Health Education Center (AHEC). I develop and oversee programs to increase recruitment to medical careers and improve placement and retention in rural areas including Saipan, Yap and Palau (Pacific countries affiliated with the US).
I recently received my PhD in Biomedical Sciences and I am using my research skills to assess the health workforce needs and resources in Hawaii. In thi s way, I hope to help develop a complete workforce so that all Hawaii residents have access to healthcare. I also do occasional clinical work at the local community health center, and run a mentoring program for middle school students in the area.
I have three active sons and my husband, Dr. Shaun Berry, has a homecare practice through which he cares for homebound patients. I'm happy to facilitate clinical experiences for residents (and students) who want to work in Hawaii.
As I look back on residency, I am reminded how glad I am that it is over every time I talk to our residents. Still, I hold our training program to the same standards we had at Long Beach Memorial
