Community Clinic
UCSD
I work part-time (25-30 hours per week) in a community clinic in South Los Angeles. We are a medium-sized clinic receiving federal, state and county funding to care for a population that is largely uninsured or covered by government programs. We employ all FPs, along with NPs and PAs, with about 8 FTE providers. We provide full-spectrum outpatient family practice, including prenatal care, lots of pediatrics, and procedures too. We also provide training for medical students, residents, and midlevel provider students.
Our clinic's mission to serve the underserved, particularly central American and Mexican immigrants, fits well with my passions. I'm also part of a growing health ministry through our church, doing health screenings and education to needy members of our community. I love hanging out with our son and daughter, and I love working only part-time!
I'm thankful for the great overall training I received. My advice to residents: Looking back, I wish I'd been more eager to learn practice management skills (which are important even in my practice setting) and procedures (they're fun, and they provide variety in practice).
